After Hours Care (7 PM- 7 AM) for Small Mammal Patients at Adobe Animal Hospital
Adobe Animal Hospital is making Emergency Services available to Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Rats, Mice, Hamsters and Chinchillas most nights from 7 PM-7 AM. It can be very difficult to get medical care if your small mammal becomes ill after your usual veterinary clinic has closed. Adobe Emergency veterinarians can provide basic assessment and treatment for common conditions in those species. If we are not able to fully address the problem after hours, we can transfer your pet to one of our exotics veterinarians in the morning.

We can provide supportive care and treatment for the following urgent conditions:
- GI Stasis in Rabbits and Guinea Pigs who have not eaten in more than 12 hours
- Severe coughing, sneezing and breathing problems
- Non Surgical Wound care: antibiotics and pain control for traumatic injuries
- Evaluating if patients can be cared for at home or need hospitalization
- Euthanasia for pets that are suffering
We can provide the following medical interventions:
- Oxygen support
- Fluid therapy
- Nutritional support
- Pain control
- Hospitalization overnight and transfer to an exotics veterinarian in the morning if one is available.
OUR EMERGENCY VETERINARIANS ARE NOT EXOTICS SPECIALISTS. THEY CAN PROVIDE STABILIZATION AND SUPPORTIVE CARE TO SMALL MAMMALS REQUIRING URGENT CARE OVERNIGHT.

What kind of Small Mammals will Adobe treat after hours?
Most nights, we will be able to offer supportive care to Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Rats, Mice, Hamsters and Chinchillas after 7 PM.
Why can’t you guarantee that there is a veterinarian on every night that sees Small Mammals? Most nights, we should have a veterinarian available who is able to treat Small Mammals. Occasionally, we have relief veterinarians or veterinarians with severe allergies to small mammals on duty and it may not be appropriate for those veterinarians to see your pet. That’s why we recommend you call before coming in.
Are the veterinarians on duty after hours exotics specialists?
No, none of our Emergency veterinarians are exotics specialists. They are experienced emergency veterinarians who primarily treat urgent conditions in dogs and cats. They can provide supportive care, hydration, antibiotics and pain control to other species if appropriate, so small mammals with urgent conditions do not have to wait until morning to have urgent needs addressed.
I only want my small mammal to be treated by an exotics specialist.
None of our veterinarians is a boarded specialist in exotic medicine or surgery. Many Adobe veterinarians have a special interest and extensive experience treating exotic species. Please call the front desk during normal hours, 7 AM-7 PM, to find out when one of our exotics doctors can see your pet. We typically have exotics veterinarians on duty 7 days a week during daytime hours.
If the Veterinarian on duty isn’t an exotic specialist or has limited experience with exotic species, do all the usual fees apply? Yes. All the usual fees apply. Your pet will be evaluated by a veterinarian and provided with medical care after hours.
Is there a veterinarian on duty at Adobe that can see Birds or Reptiles after hours?
Unfortunately, we are not able to see birds or reptiles on Emergency between 7 PM and 7 AM. Please call during our normal hours 7 AM -7 PM to find out when there is a veterinarian on duty who sees those species.
